Gear essentials for my long-distance hikes

Here’s my personal gear list—everything I bring on a backpacking trail. I aim to pack light but never skip the essentials. Depending on the trail and climate, I’ll adjust with items. And I always make room for a little luxury to get me through tough times. I use some affliated links.

Backpack

My backpack is my trusted trail buddy. It should be just the right size and light enough when empty. I bought the Osprey Eja 58L prior to hike the John Muir Trail—perfect for fitting a big bear canister and a warm sleeping bag. It’s big enough for 10 days of food but still comfy thanks to its frame. It has been doing a great job on other trails I hiked as well.

Tent & sleeping system

My tent is my home, and my sleep system is my bed —so this is all about comfort and personal preference.

  • Long distance trekking tent: Durston X-Mid Solid (trekking pole setup)
  • Short distance tent: Decathlon Quechua MH100 A cheap but reliable and spacious tent I’ve used on the GR5 and for weekend trips. I did upgrade with lighter poles and stakes.
  • Sleeping bag: From REI (comfortable up to -10°C, no longer available)

Hiking shoes & clothes

There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing! Consider what the climate will be like where you’re going. Dress in layers and pack essentials like a rain jacket, puffy/fleece, and proper hiking shoes.

  • Shoes: Durable hiking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Optional camp shoes: Lightweight sandals
  • Hiking poles: Dual-purpose as hiking poles and tent poles

Hygiene

Electronics

Safety, repair & navigation

  • First aid kit (with blister plasters) and an emergency blanket
  • Small repair kit (duct tape, sewing kit, superglue)
  • Sun protection: sunscreen, sunglasses, hat
  • GPS device, compass, and map—critical for navigating in bad weather
  • Emergency beacon
